Birthday Baked Brie

It was Chris' birthday yesterday and I was in the mood to do some cooking.

Cake baking is one of my short suits.

I decided to take a different tack.

Brie with sauteed mushrooms/garlic/onion baked in puff pastry ala Air Traffic Mike.

Looks pretty good, doesn't it?

Birthday cakes are nice, but a nice baked brie served with fresh sliced Bosc pears, Granny Smith apples, Mandarin oranges, Grape tomatoes, and crusty Italian bread crisps (not shown) seemed like a better idea.

I made this yesterday while simultaneously making a pot of my homemade gumbo.

Being able to multitask has definite advantages in almost any situation including cooking. Making a soup made the multitasking even easier. With few exceptions, you can turn a soup off for a bit and get other stuff done.

Like drop off a freshly baked brie while en route to the grocery store.

The gumbo needed some sage and thyme, neither of which I had on hand.

The 20 minute break in simmering had no effect on the gumbo and gave me the chance to step out of the kitchen for a few brief moments.

Yesterday was a "kitchen day".

Today will be a "clean up the kitchen" day, then it's off to take some photos around the county.

Splitty the Maul will be riding "shotgun" as usual.

Until the next time, all y'all take care of yourselves.
